Two Miami legislators pushed condo reform measures through the Florida Legislature which was signed into law by Gov. Charlie Crist. These measures were passed to protect condo owners from condo associations and their finances.
According to the Miami Herald, “Julio Robaina, a Miami Republican, has heard his fair share of horror stories about unruly condo associations - from limits on access to financial records to board members’ helping themselves to funds.”
“With no one really look over these boards, the temptation has driven many people to fraud the associations”, said Robaina.
The bill has provisions to require any condo association director charged with theft to be immediately removed from their position in the association until charges are cleared. Also, condo associations must give a 30-day notice to condo owners before filing a lien against the owner, among several other provisions benefiting condo owners.
“What they have done is given power back to the people” said Governor Crist after signing the bill.
