Living in South Miami, High Pines and Coral Gables – City Of South Miami Commision Meeting
Categories: Coral Gables, High Pines, Real Estate News, South Miami
hiThough the City of South Miami handled the budget crisis much more adroitly than other cities, it hasn’t escaped unscathed as the city commission unexpectedly fired the city manager last Tuesday. They had decided to appoint a new interim city manager Thursday, but didn’t do that so they could have more time to interview candidates. In addition the city commission could not determine how much severance pay to give to the former manager. On the one hand the city manager’s contract specifies that he is entitled to 6 months while the city’s charter specifies that he should receive 30 days. Lets hope the city doesn’t spend more in fees determining the answer than the 6 months he might be owed. More to come on this matter.

I have not been following South Miami politics so I don’t know the reasons that the commission decided to take this action. It must have been warranted or risk a lawsuit.
Unlike South Miami, Coral Gables’ city manager was convicted of altering city records and the commission didn’t fire him as would have been expected. Instead, they allowed him to retire on his own terms, changing city human resources policy first to give himself an additional $25,000 “parting gift”. And now he will receive his full pension for life, receiving in retirement much more money that most people make while working for a living.
