Business week ranked the Village of Pinecrest the tenth most expensive suburb in each of the 52 states. In order to garner that dubious distinction, it had to be ranked the most expensive in the State of Florida.

There is a price to pay for having excellent public schools, the highest concentration of top private schools in Miami-Dade County, and a huge number of parks for the size of the community, a community center, public library, small government and large lots.

The article also points out that because the market is so low, now may be a good time to get into these markets if you had been locked out before because of pricing.

Don’t worry about being leaving your social life behind. There is plenty of room to entertain the friends and relatives who will be calling for a visit. In addition to the two additional bedrooms, the building has a hotel room that you can reserve for your guests to rent. A wonderful outdoor area perfect for entertaining has two built-in barbecues and is right next to the pool.

Amazingly peaceful, yet close to the Falls and Dadeland Malls, downtown Miami, Coral Gables, and the Grove, and all the activities going on in Miami in the winter.

They have a great menu for breakfast, lunch and dinner and on Friday and Saturday evenings you can join them for live Jazz. The outdoor patio area is a special treat in an area that lacks charming outdoor dining options. You place your order inside, are given a number and your food and drinks are brought to your table. This is a wonderful neighborhood place to take visiting friends and relatives to show them why you love living here!

To kick off the program at Pinecrest Elementary, there will be 5 week soccer clinic with Real Madrid. The clinic will start the week on November 12. Look in your child’s back pack for more information.

Alberto Carvalho, Miami Dade County Public Schools Superintendent, was at a candidates forum sponsored by the Palmetto Middle School PTSA last Thursday evening at the Community Center in Pinecrest. He made what I consider is probably the most important statement to Florida residents this political season: spending on education is an investment in our State’s future. He made this statement because our State’s economy is such that more cuts are coming, probably in a special session in December. He will be in Tallahassee not asking for no cuts, but rather trying to make the cuts to our district as small as possible. He knows this will be a daunting task because there are basically three main areas where you can cut: Health, Police/Prisons, and Education. He argues that although these are all important areas and the cuts are going to be difficult for all sectors, that in the long run an investment in education is going to decrease the need for increase spending in health and police/prisons.

I would take his arguement a step further and say that an investment in education is going to make Florida more attractive to businesses and will increase our ability to diversify our economy. If we create a skilled workforce and give priority to our educational system, businesses will relocate here or, if already here, stay. An article in this Sunday’s Miami Herald on the pressures on higher education in Florida states that at a time when more Florida residents are applying to in-state schools, “Funding cuts by the Legislature have led to reductions in enrollment, faculty layoffs or scuttled programs at several institutions, including the flagship University of Florida and Florida International University.” If we were to play our cards right and pump up education spending at a time when more of our students are applying, we would keep our students in-state where they are more likely to stay and work once they graduate.

Whenever I think about education and spending, I remember a quote by Derek Bok, President of Harvard University 1971-1990, “If you think education is expensive, try ignorance.”
