Also, for the students 13 and older, Thursday’s are their lucky day, with $6 admission…

Not a bad tidbit, especially with the price of movie tickets today, concessions and parking!

I checked out the AMC website and it does state it is for a limited time, so enjoy now, while the heat is on and most likely we will be drenched with more rain….

Beat the heat with some “cool” kid entertainment at the Museum of Discovery and Science right in the heart of Ft. Lauderdale.

From the moment you arrive in the courtyard, their attention’s will be captivated by the Great Gravity Clock, a 52 foot kinetic energy sculpture, which ticks, clicks, whizzes and whooshes as balls roll around the rails in rhythmic motion to tell time.

Make sure you have some coins handy, to make a wish in the fountain!

Hold on tight, ’cause the moment you walk thru the doors, this is where the sensory overload will kick in and the kids will be off in all directions.

On the first floor, you have an indoor playground/discovery area where children can climb a tree, splash with water, sail a boat, build walls on a house and pick oranges. I am not quite sure why but the kids seem to go gaga for the orange grove activity thingy…(appropriate for age 6 and under)

Then, you have creatures…There are sharks, sting rays, turtles and bats as well as much more for you to explore in caverns and caves.

Upstairs is where it gets a little more “geeky” and geared more for the older kids, but they have lots of interactive exhibits which the parents can join in too…

My favorite is the Mission to Mars rocket simulated rocket ride…HOLD ON!!!

And to top it off they have an IMAX Theatre…

The general admission to the Museum is $10 for adults and $8 for kids, but if you are a local, I highly recommend purchasing an annual membership. $95 gets 2 adults and your kid(s) into the museum for a year, with 4 complimentary guest passes and a 2 complimentary IMAX passes and you also have free access to 280 museums worldwide-major deal and no brain-er! (Other types available)…

All in all, it is a fantastic place for family fun, and afterwards, when the heat has died down-you can take a lesiurely stroll down Riverwalk and grab a bite to eat!

Your home address dictates which public schools your children are entitled to attend. There are boundaries - and from one street to the next, the results could equal the difference between a A school and C school. Therefore, it is important to do your homework prior to beginning your new home search and in addition, to work with a realtor who is versed about the school districts in the neighbourhoods you are considering, especially if you are relocating and new to the area and honestly do not have a clue.

Fortunately, the parents in Broward County are blessed with an excellent public school system, which …“is the nation’s sixth-largest district and the best!”

Being that Fort Lauderdale is known for it’s waterways, starting from the water seemed the perfect place to begin.

So I hitched a ride on the River Taxi from the the Historic District @ River House and off I went with Captain Dave. I had no particular destination, so I bought a round trip ticket and went along for the fresh breezes and gorgeous scenery.

Tickets are $6.00 for adults and $5.00 for children one way from anywhere in zone A. (Beach place to Cooley’s Landing) as part of the regular daily scheduled service.

Or you can use them like a taxi and use the on-call service and arrange a pick up and drop off to your favorite restaurant or location. (Prices varies on time, distance and availability). Give them a call-954-880-7060

Either way, it is a breezy way to get around and enjoy all the beautiful views and even do a little house shopping!

As a former Miami-an, I must admit I was a little sceptical of my new venture and this new land, Fort Lauderdale, across the line in a place called Broward.

Those Dade folk will tell you stories to scare you away from ever venturing over the line, so much so, that you may never do it. But, let me tell you that from what I have seen and learned in my two short weeks here is that, Ft. Lauderdale is a beautiful place and like Miami Beach, also surrounded by water, and lots of it!

Fort Lauderdale is known as the boating capital of the world. That statement is pretty impressive in itself, and I remember having heard that before ever visiting. Coming here and cruising around a little, I can see why. They have so much water everywhere and yachts galore. And mega yachts, yachts bigger than the houses they are docked in front of and marina’s with more yachts. It is truly a boaters paradise.

And it’s cheap! Well compared to Miami Beach, you can get a lot more house for your money, and it seems that restaurants are half price as well.

And the people are nice as well and like Miami Beach, they are just as eclectic and diverse.

So, here I am and off I go to explore my new world and all things Fort Lauderdale…

A parent from school just sent me this information and link to a great website where you can enter your address and a map will pop up with your house (as a small icon of a house). There will be red, blue and green squares surrounding your entire neighborhood. When you click on the squares a picture of a criminal will appear with his or her home address and the description of the crime he or she has committed.

This is a great tool for you to search for your neighborhood for your family and friends.

Miami- Dade has added a nifty calculator tool to estimate your savings. Just go to their website and put in your current property information and hit search.

Once the results pop up and your information is on the screen, you will see a calculator icon and a highlighted link saying “Portability S.O.H. Calculator”.

Click on that link and it will populate your current property information to the new calculator screen (step 1).

Then complete (step 2) with the Estimated Market Value and City where the new home is located and hit “estimate” and viola! It tells you portability…
