Former UM Tennis Player Shines in Delray Beach Tournament

Former University of Miami tennis star Eric Hechtman won the Delray Beach ITC “Survivor Series I” pre-qualifying tournament this past weekend. The draw included 124 other players. Hechtman scored a three-set win over FAU junior Marc Abdelnour (2-6, 6-4, 6-2) on Tuesday in Delray. Eric reached the finals the past two years-the third time was the charm!

Hechtman is one step from playing in the ITC by earning a wild card into the ATP World Tour event’s qualifying tournament to be played in February. The top 4 players in the 32-player draw advance into the ATP main event.

Eric graduated from UM in 2006 and is now a Pro at Royal Palm Tennis Club, in Pinecrest. Hechtman has been the hitting partner for Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal & Serena Williams. He often plays with Venus Williams as her hitting partner.

The Delray Beach ITC tournament will be played February 22-28 and will feature headlining tennis players like Mardy Fish, James Blake and Tommy Haas. The complete article is available here.

Deed-in-Lieu

There are many questions surrounding the deed-in-lieu of foreclosure, so here are some answers.

A deed-in-lieu of means that the borrower conveys all interest to the lender in order to satisfy the loan that’s in default and avoid foreclosure. This process is advantageous to the borrower because it releases them from the indebtedness associated with the loan, and it hurts their credit score less than a foreclosure.

In order for this process to take place, both sides must enter into it voluntarily, acting in good faith. The property must not have any liens against it and it must be on the market at fair value for at least three months. If it does not sell in that time period, then the process may begin. Most lenders have a loss mitigation department which handles the process and they will ask for recent financial statements and paystubs, among other things. Once it is approved by the bank, the owner needs to vacate the property.

New Ship Joining The Disney Cruise Family

Looking for the perfect family getaway, then take a trip on the high seas with Disney’s newest ship, the Disney Dream. Scheduled for completion in early 2011, they are accepting reservations beginning November 9, 2009.

The ship will be over 1,000 feet in length, have 14 decks and weigh 128,000 tons. The ship will have 1,250 staterooms and can accomodate not only 4,000 passengers, but the approximately 1,500 crew members who help run the ship smoothly.

Guests will get to admire the early 20-th century design, state of the art technology and Art Deco style. Most staterooms feature split bathrooms (a first for the cruise industry) and contemporary designs.

The ship offers numerous activities for kids, teens and adults, including AquaDuck . AquaDuck is the first water coaster which takes riders over the sea through clear waterslide tubes. For the adults, the ship features a spa and 5 nightclubs.

The dining options are endless, with elegant adult-only restaurants, Main dining, and made-to-order dinners, all in specially themed restaurants. There is entertainment galore, with live musical shows, 3-D movies, deck parties as well as 3 pools.

The Disney Dream will sail out of Miami to the Bahamas for 3, 4 or 5 night cruises beginning in early 2011.

University of Miami Alumni & Homecoming Weekend

The University of Miami welcomes back it’s alumni for a 3-day celebration, November 5-7. The activities are abundant, with events such as “Alumni Avenue,” giving alums a chance to reconnect and a pre-homecoming game celebration. Students are invited to celebrate Homecoming Weekend among the alumni at Landshark Stadium, where the # 16 ranked Canes take on the University of Virginia. Kickoff is noon and will be broadcast on Raycom.

Miami Halloween Activities

It’s that time of year, when the kids dress up and Trick-or-Treat. Here are some fun ways to celebrate Halloween:

MetroBoo at MetroZoo: October 30-31. After paying the zoo admission, the event is free. Kids 12 and under can enjoy trick-or-treating and costume contests.

Monster Splash at Miami Seaquarium: October 24, 25, 28, 29, 30 and 31. The aquarium hosts a fall harvest festival, firweorks, animal shows, trick-or-treating and a haunted house. Admission is $21.95 for kids ages 3-12 and $24.95 for adults.

Halloween on the Mile: October 31. From 4-7 pm, Miracle Mile in Coral Gables features trick-or-treating. There is also a haunted house, a scavenger hunt and costume contests for both kids and dogs.

South Miami Haunted House: October 30. From 6-8 pm, enjoy a haunted house, games, music and a costume contest at the Gibson-Bethel community Center.

Gables To The Bay Regatta

Gables To The Bay Regatta will take place on October 17, 2009, one week after the famed Columbus Day Regatta. The event is open to all ages with self propelled watercraft: kayaks, canoes and stand up paddle boards. The race distance is 5 miles from US 1 and S. Alhambra Circle, the Mahi Waterway to Shake-A-Leg Dock in Coconut Grove. There will be a race celebration immediately following the water activities, at Shake-A-Leg, with food, live music, raffles, clinics and giveaways.

Each class will have morning and afternoon races, with staggered starts and the faster classes leaving first. Refreshments will be provided at Ingraham Terrace Park and the Shake-A-Leg docks. Jimmy Lewis will host paddle borad clinics for the whole family. The event is brought to you by many sponors, including Mercedes-Benz of Coral Gables, Shake-A-Leg Miami, The City of Coral Gables and Tuuci. Come out for a fun filled family day.

Columbus Day Regatta in Miami This Weekend

Columbus Day Regatta has been a huge local event for many years. This year, the festivities continue the weekend of October 10-12, with the race starting at 10 am on Saturday the 11th. This year’s crest for the regatta flags was created by Astrid Dalins, and captures the history and meaning of Columbus Day.

The meaning of the Columbus Day crest goes back to 1960, when the Columbus Day Cruising Regatta Crew flew Cristobal Colon, the Duke of Verangua and a direct decendent of Christopher Columbus, from Spain to Miami with his Duchess to watch the annual regatta. During his stay,he gave the committe the go ahead to use the coat of arms of Columbus as the emblem for the club.

After Christopher Columbus’ journey of discovery, he was honored by the crown as the Admiral of the Ocean Seas and was given his own crest. The two bottom portions represent the Islands he discovered as well as the naval rank he received from the crown. In the top left corner, the castle represents the Kingdom of Castille, for Queen Isabella I, while the right corner is for the kingdom of Aragon for Ferdinand II, whose marriage unified Spain right before Columbus sailed.

Although the races embody the meaning of Christopher Columbus’ voyage to the New World, many locals head out to Elliot Key and spend the day (or the weekend) on the water, enjoying a typical Fall day in Miami.
