 Here’s another oportunity to show our troops who are stationed overseas for the holidays that we appreciate all that they do for us.  Operation Gratitude was established in 2003 and has to date sent over 464,000 care packages to U.S. Troops deployed overseas. These care packages contain food, hygiene products, entertainment items, and personal letters of appreciation. Three events are being held right here in our community:

Along with the costume contests there will be live entertainment, bounce house,inflatables,arts and crafts.  A pumpkin Patch will be decorating the field.  Free cotton candy and snow cones!

Safety Tips for this Gollies Event compliments of the City of Weston and the Broward Sheriff’s Office.

1. Wear a costume that’s easy to walk in, see in and be seen.

2. Have an adult go with you trick or treating.

3. Trick or treat in your own neighborhood.

4. Carry a flashlight.

5. Use makeup instead of a mask.

6. Cross at corners never in the middle of a street.

7. Stay on sidewalks.

8. Wait till you get home to go through your candy.  Don’t except unwrapped treats.

I have been doing this on and off for the last 5 or 6 years, and last night was the first time that I came away disturbed. Why ? Because of the sharp increase in the number of individuals being served dinner. Last night we fed 450 which is up from the usual number of 350. The sad thing is that these individuals really look just like you and I and not the ill individuals who are characterized as “Homeless”. I think there is a phrase which says “except for the grace of god there goes I.” Lets hope that the job layoffs abate soon and hiring begins again.

The Village of Key Biscayne will be celebrating it’s 11th WinterFest and Winterfest Eve.  WinterFest Eve will be held on Saturday, December 5th and WinterFest will be held on Sunday, December 6th, from 4:30 pm to 7:30 pm with Santa arriving at 4:45pm in a festive horse drawn carriage.

Winterfest 2009 will have old favorites such as the rock climbing wall, two horse and buggies, slides, clowns, entertainment, food, and photos with Santa.   The Mayor will light the 42 foot Christmas tree at sundown. Local restaurants will have delicious foods to sell.

The WinterFest committee is looking for Sponsors to support WinterFest 2009.  Some of the benefits of sponsorship are:  Your name listed on posters in store fronts around the Village, on the Event Programs, on Village TV Station Channel 77, in the Islander News and “On Stage” recognition during the Event by the MC.

Season Six American Idol winner Jordin Sparks made a stop at Y-100’s studio Wednesday morning with a secret performance and interview. A few lucky fans were treated to Jordin’s “One Step At A Time” and her current single “Battlefield,” as well as a Q&A with the audience. She is currently on tour with the Jonas Brothers and will be joining Britney Spears on the second leg of her Circus Tour, returning to the American Airlines Arena on September 2.

Watch the video, where Jordin sings two songs and mentions loving Miami as well as having family living in the area. The 20 year old singer is just as she was on the tv show…down to earth and sweet; very dedicated to her fans and appreciative of all our support.
