New Ship Joining The Disney Cruise Family

Looking for the perfect family getaway, then take a trip on the high seas with Disney’s newest ship, the Disney Dream. Scheduled for completion in early 2011, they are accepting reservations beginning November 9, 2009.

The ship will be over 1,000 feet in length, have 14 decks and weigh 128,000 tons. The ship will have 1,250 staterooms and can accomodate not only 4,000 passengers, but the approximately 1,500 crew members who help run the ship smoothly.

Guests will get to admire the early 20-th century design, state of the art technology and Art Deco style. Most staterooms feature split bathrooms (a first for the cruise industry) and contemporary designs.

The ship offers numerous activities for kids, teens and adults, including AquaDuck . AquaDuck is the first water coaster which takes riders over the sea through clear waterslide tubes. For the adults, the ship features a spa and 5 nightclubs.

The dining options are endless, with elegant adult-only restaurants, Main dining, and made-to-order dinners, all in specially themed restaurants. There is entertainment galore, with live musical shows, 3-D movies, deck parties as well as 3 pools.

The Disney Dream will sail out of Miami to the Bahamas for 3, 4 or 5 night cruises beginning in early 2011.

New trend in the Grove – Sale Rack

There is a new store that opened in Coconut Grove with a concept I had not heard of before. It is called Sale Rack and they buy, sell and trade clothing. I was there recently and she has some wonderful stuff at fabulous prices. Much of her inventory is from stores that have gone out of business so she is passing on her savings to the public.

The owners name is Allison and she recently moved here from Chicago where this concept seems to be somewhat common. They have a full line of women’s clothes and accessories as well as men’s shirts, sweaters and jackets.

The shop is located at 3096 Fuller Street, across from Barracuda, in the heart of the Grove.

One more way to re-purpose and recycle our treasures. Check it out!!

Living in South Miami, High Pines and Coral Gables – Foot Works-The Epicenter Of Running In Miami

The other day I had the opportunity to visit with Hans Huseby who with his wife Laurie have owned and operated the highly successful running store FootWorks in downtown South Miami for the last 36 years. FootWorks is without a doubt the textbook example on how to start a small business, how to run it properly, and how to make it more successful than any of its competitors. On any day you will find runners from beginners to ultra marathoners somewhere around the store. As of right now 800 runners are participating in the Team FootWorks Miami Marathon training sessions. I congratulate the Husebys on their success, and I am happy to have done business with them over the years. So if you move to Miami or live in Miami and like to run make a note to visit FootWorks in South Miami at the intersection of Red Road and Sunset Drive..

October 28 is National Chocolate Day

Did you know that today is National Chocolate Day, as if chocolateholics needed a holiday. I kid you not there is a holiday to celebrate chocolate and it’s today. In fact there are quite a few days that honor chocolate, December 28th and 29th are also National Chocolate Days, July 28th is National Milk Chocolate Day, not to be confused with National Chocolate Milk Day and September 13 is International Chocolate Day. So enjoy your sweet, dark decadent candy or dessert. It’s a day to celebrate, so calories don’t count!

P.S. If by chance you miss today’s holiday, fear not December 28th and 29th are just around the corner!

Miami Halloween Activities

It’s that time of year, when the kids dress up and Trick-or-Treat. Here are some fun ways to celebrate Halloween:

MetroBoo at MetroZoo: October 30-31. After paying the zoo admission, the event is free. Kids 12 and under can enjoy trick-or-treating and costume contests.

Monster Splash at Miami Seaquarium: October 24, 25, 28, 29, 30 and 31. The aquarium hosts a fall harvest festival, firweorks, animal shows, trick-or-treating and a haunted house. Admission is $21.95 for kids ages 3-12 and $24.95 for adults.

Halloween on the Mile: October 31. From 4-7 pm, Miracle Mile in Coral Gables features trick-or-treating. There is also a haunted house, a scavenger hunt and costume contests for both kids and dogs.

South Miami Haunted House: October 30. From 6-8 pm, enjoy a haunted house, games, music and a costume contest at the Gibson-Bethel community Center.

Living in South Miami, High Pines and Coral Gables – Dinner at Tutto Pasta

Last Thursday my wife and I went out for dinner with our good friend and owner of South Miami’s well known Bellezza Spa at 7245 SW 57 Ct.. We left the immediate area of South Miami/Coral Gables and went just west of Brickell to Tutto Pasta a small Brazilian Italian restaurant at 1751 SW 3rd Ave, Miami. This is another local tip on where to go to eat. The food is fabulous, the prices reasonable, and the waiters friendly. Of course if you want to go to a more well known expensive place on South Beach that is your choice, but if you like good food you might want to try Tutto Pasta.

Miami is a great place to live for a plethora of reasons not the least of which is its fine restaurants. One of the advantages of being a local is our knowledge of the really good restaurants versus the ones which show up in all the guide books and cost and arm and a leg, especially on South Beach. The other night I had dinner at the River Oyster Bar which is downtown a block off of Brickell and a block south of the Miami River next to the famous Tobacco Road Bar. If you are a fish lover you can’t beat this place. I have spent a lot of time in the Keys and I would put the seafood at the River Oyster Bar up with Key West’s incomparable Louie’s Backyard, 7 Fish, and Cafe Sole. Next time you want seafood in Miami give the River Oyster Bar a try.

Halloween Themed Movie Night Oct. 30 in Coral Reef Park – Palmetto Bay, FL

One of the real treats about living in Palmetto Bay, FL is the well utilized Coral Reef Park. Several times a year, the Village puts on a Movie Night.

The movie night event started about 4 years ago and seems to always bring terrific family-friendly movies each and every time.

In the Halloween spirit, “Igor” will be featured at Halloween Movie Night at Coral Reef Park, Friday, Oct. 30, at 7 PM. Sponsored by Gus Machado Ford, residents will even be given microwave popcorn to bring to the park.

In a smart move to encourage residents to get involved, the bags of popcorn will be distributed to residents who attend the October 21st State of the Village. Palmetto Bay is always thinking…

My family has enjoyed half a dozen of these events already and we plan on being there for “Igor”. We encourage you to join us. We suggest bringing bug spray, one flashlight per kid (mostly so they can play) and an oversized blanket.

Tired Of The Same Old Vacation Plans?

Vacation in paradise this winter……try something different in a true unique paradise!! Stay at an Island home on the Atlantic….in the Bahamas!! Only 175 miles east of Palm Beach is a contradiction to the ‘opulence’ and the hustle of the Palm Beaches. To say that the Abaco Islands are magnificent would be an understatement. The most tranquil and beautiful of this small chain of Islands (in my opinion) is the settlement of Great Guana Cay with its approximately 150 permanent, friendly residents.

Great Guana Cay is a 45 minute flight from Palm Beach, Ft. Lauderdale or Miami. The local airport is in Marsh Harbor and there are several flights available, including daily flights with American or Continental. From there it’s just a short and awe-inspiring ferry ride to Guana Cay. The Guana beaches are made up of perfect white sand and everyday you can see right through 30 feet of turquoise water. Directly in front of the home that I stayed at is the 3^rd largest natural reef in the world. Also in front of the home was a natural cave that enjoys the water lapping up inside, a great place for kids to play. This vacation home offered amazing views of the Atlantic and the Sea of Abaco. Whether you enjoy spending your time reading on the balcony overlooking the water or snorkeling in the reef this is an amazing place to visit.

The people on the island are welcoming and friendly and have been able to enjoy the tourism dollars while maintaining the character of a true village. This is a vacation spot you would not forget.
