Beat the heat with some “cool” kid entertainment at the Museum of Discovery and Science right in the heart of Ft. Lauderdale.

From the moment you arrive in the courtyard, their attention’s will be captivated by the Great Gravity Clock, a 52 foot kinetic energy sculpture, which ticks, clicks, whizzes and whooshes as balls roll around the rails in rhythmic motion to tell time.

Make sure you have some coins handy, to make a wish in the fountain!

Hold on tight, ’cause the moment you walk thru the doors, this is where the sensory overload will kick in and the kids will be off in all directions.

On the first floor, you have an indoor playground/discovery area where children can climb a tree, splash with water, sail a boat, build walls on a house and pick oranges. I am not quite sure why but the kids seem to go gaga for the orange grove activity thingy…(appropriate for age 6 and under)

Then, you have creatures…There are sharks, sting rays, turtles and bats as well as much more for you to explore in caverns and caves.

Upstairs is where it gets a little more “geeky” and geared more for the older kids, but they have lots of interactive exhibits which the parents can join in too…

My favorite is the Mission to Mars rocket simulated rocket ride…HOLD ON!!!

And to top it off they have an IMAX Theatre…

The general admission to the Museum is $10 for adults and $8 for kids, but if you are a local, I highly recommend purchasing an annual membership. $95 gets 2 adults and your kid(s) into the museum for a year, with 4 complimentary guest passes and a 2 complimentary IMAX passes and you also have free access to 280 museums worldwide-major deal and no brain-er! (Other types available)…

All in all, it is a fantastic place for family fun, and afterwards, when the heat has died down-you can take a lesiurely stroll down Riverwalk and grab a bite to eat!

Your home address dictates which public schools your children are entitled to attend. There are boundaries - and from one street to the next, the results could equal the difference between a A school and C school. Therefore, it is important to do your homework prior to beginning your new home search and in addition, to work with a realtor who is versed about the school districts in the neighbourhoods you are considering, especially if you are relocating and new to the area and honestly do not have a clue.

Fortunately, the parents in Broward County are blessed with an excellent public school system, which …“is the nation’s sixth-largest district and the best!”

And presently, there are many fabulous properties on the market both for sale and for rent right here in Ft. Lauderdale in those great school districts, take a look for yourself.

For the most recent 30 day period that number increased to 33 units according to MLS figures.

While such a small sample over such a short period cannot be considered statistically significant, in a market that has not given us much to cheer about for almost three years, I am pleased to see this increase.

Where did these sales come from? The most units sold (7) were at the Yacht Club, followed by four units at Murano Grande, and three at South Pointe Tower. Two units were sold at the Courts, the Continuum, Portofino Tower, Absolut and 345 Ocean Drive. The remaining 9 units were sold in separate buildings.

The two highest price sales were $3,400,000 each for unit 3401 at Murano and unit 703 at Apogee. A total of 10 units sold for over $1,000,000. The two lowest sales were $146,000 for a unit at 361 Collins Avenue, and $237,000 for a unit at
345 Ocean Drive.

The median price was $600,000, with 16 units sold above and below that amount. The average selling price for all the units was $604.00/sf, and the average sales price was $950,615.

Neither had I, at least until I bought my current house with four jackfruit trees! Now I’m the jackfruit queen (according to my husband) and, more importantly, I’ve discovered an entire underworld of jackfruit aficionados right here in Miami — an absolute cult-like following. Who knew? It was 2001 and we had been moved in to our house only a few short days when it all started. Knock, knock. Who’s there? We want jackfruit. I buy jackfruit. We need jackfruit. Give us jackfruit. Are jackfruit ready? How much for jackfruit? Needless to say, we got up to speed on jackfruit pretty fast — what are they? how big do they get? how do you know when they’re ripe? how do you eat them? fresh? cooked? how the heck do you get a 40-pound fruit down from a 40-ft high branch? Well, we found several local markets who buy wholesale from us, and our son’s college account is all the better for it.

Jackfruit is the largest tree-borne fruit in the world, reaching up to 120 pounds (although they don’t get that large here in the states — our record is 44 pounds). Thought to be indigenous to the Western Ghats of India, they are a staple in many Asian countries, and are now being grown in Africa, Australia and some of the Caribbean islands. They have a sweetish-crunchyish-juicy fruit gum-ish flavor. It is a beautiful 55′ Azimut yacht made in Italy with 4 bedrooms and 3 baths. Recently, on one very beautiful Sunday in April, myself and about 40 friends, went cruising to a place I had never been - “No Name Harbor” (at the Southwest end of Key Biscayne). We spent several hours swimming, socializing and probably disturbing the peace but getting there and back was the treat. The trip out encompassed a leisurely cruise around Star Island, Hibiscus Island, Palm Island, past the Port of Miami and into the open waters of Biscayne Bay. The trip back was phenomenal - there is nothing like seeing our beautiful City of Miami from the water, especially around sunset. What an exhilarating day.

TIPS ON PUMPING GAS

I spend a lot of time driving around, so when I got this information from a friend of mine who is in the gas business, I thought this would help us all. Read below and save some money.

“I don’t know what you guys are paying for gasoline…. but here in California we are paying up to $3.75 to $4.10 per gallon. My line of work is in petroleum for about 31 years now, so here are some tricks to get more of your money’s worth for every gallon:

Here at the Kinder Morgan Pipeline where I work in San Jose , CA we deliver about 4 million gallons in a 24-hour period through the pipeline. One day is diesel the next day is jet fuel, and gasoline, regular and premium grades. We have 34-storage tanks with a total capacity of 16,800,000 gallons.

Only buy or fill up your car or truck in the early morning when the ground temperature is still cold. Remember that all service stations have their storage tanks buried ! below ground. The colder the ground the more dense the gasoline, when it gets warmer gasoline expands , so buying in the afternoon or in the evening….your gallon is not exactly a gallon . In the petroleum business, the specific gravity and the temperature of the gasoline, diesel and jet fuel, ethanol and other petroleum products plays an important role.

A 1-degree rise in temperature is a big deal for this business. But the service stations do not have temperature compensation at the pumps.

When you’re filling up do not squeeze the trigger of the nozzle to a fast mode. If you look you will see that the trigger has three (3) stages: low, middle, and high. You should be pumping on low mode, thereby minimizing the vapors that are created while you are pumping. All hoses at the pump have a vapor return. If you are pumping on the fast rate, some of the liquid that goes to your tank becomes vapor. Those vapors are being sucked up and back into the underground storage tank so you’re getting less worth for your money.

One of the most important tips is to fill up when your gas tank is HALF FULL. The reason for this is the more gas you have in your tank the less air occupying its empty space. Gasoline evaporates faster than you can imagine. Gasoline storage tanks have an internal floating roof. This roof serves as zero clearance between the gas and the atmosphere, so it minimizes the evaporation. Unlike service stations, here where I work, every truck that we load is temperature compensated so that every gallon is actually the exact amount.

Another reminder, if there is a gasoline truck pumping into the storage tanks when you stop to buy gas, DO NO T fill up; most likely the gasoline is being stirred up as the gas is being delivered, and you might pick up some of the dirt that normally settles on the bottom.

Hope this is helpful, anyway to save a buck at the pump.
